Tuesday, March 4th

Friends in my small group worked on matching and subitizing.  Subitizing is the instant visual recognition of a pattern such as the dots on a die or domino.  This is beneficial for building mental math and comparisons.

During our morning meeting time, Mrs. Beltz worked on phonological awareness skills using our Heggerty program while I had friends "write with me".  This is where students tell me something that they would like for me to write out.  During the process we find similarities in letters, words, sentence structure as well as personal experiences.  Here are the sentences from one of today's groups.
Exposure to this type of print is important to help children learn that written language carries meaning.  Children are able to practice tracking the print (following from left to right) while the words are being heard or said.  The is a skill needed to begin the process of reading.

Some friends added arrows to the bowling lanes during free choice time.
